The Big Easy gets another shot at hosting Wrestlemania
Wrestlemania 30 in New Orleans was quite the historic event. Fans in attendance at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome were treated to the culmination of Daniel Bryan’s quest to become the WWE Champion. They were also witness to the historic “breaking of the streak” when Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker. Even though Wrestlemania 30 took place in 2014, the WWE has decided to run the 2018 edition of Wrestlemania live from New Orleans, Louisiana.
The “rumors” have been circulating for a week or so, but the WWE and officials in New Orleans and Louisiana have finally made things official. The Times-Picayune first reported the news, and the WWE has confirmed it, along with hosting a press conference in New Orleans on January 10th. The biggest wrestling event of 2018 will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday, April 8th, 2018. As with all Wrestlemania events in recent years, the events leading up to and directly after the big spectacle, such as the Hall of Fame Ceremony, NXT: Takeover, Raw, and Smackdown Live!, will also be held in New Orleans.
Some have wondered why the WWE has decided to return to New Orleans so quickly, especially when other venues and cities made strong efforts to land Wrestlemania. Philadelphia and Minneapolis were both considered to be in the running for the event. Rumors were St. Louis was also under consideration. Those cities, though, probably lost out to New Orleans for a couple of reasons.
A big reason, as mentioned by Dave Meltzer, is that the city of New Orleans plans to involve Wrestlemania and the WWE in their 300th birthday celebration throughout 2018. New Orleans plans to go all out for these celebrations so it is no wonder why they’d want a big entertainment event like Wrestlemania to be in the city in 2018.
Another big reason is the simple fact New Orleans is quite experienced in hosting a mega entertainment event like Wrestlemania. The city has extensive history in hosting things like the Super Bowl, the Final Four, and many other big events. New Orleans is a city that is designed for entertainment on a large scale.
The close proximity of all the venues that will be in used throughout the week along with how smoothly things went in 2014 also had to be big factors in the decision.
Even though the march to Wrestlemania in 2017 has begun, it’s fun to start thinking of what could headline and be featured at Wrestlemana in 2018. What matches do you think will be featured on the biggest show of that year?
