Birmingham and Tuscaloosa fans of that savory, spicy, gastrointestinal gauntlet known as chili should be rejoicing now that it’s the month of February. There are two, yes, TWO, chili competitions that should pique their interest. In fact, they happen in consecutive weeks so you can really give your guts the proper late winter workout that it deserves.
In the practice of full disclosure, please note that I’m 100% involved in organizing and putting on both of these events so I’m incredibly biased towards making sure they are raving successes.
The first competition takes place on February 13th at Saturn Birmingham in the Avondale neighborhood of the Magic City. Contestants can prep their chili at home and then enter their creations between 6:15 and 7:00 p.m. that evening. Public tasting and judging will occur after 7:00 P.M. Most importantly, though, cash prizes will be awarded. That’s right. Cold hard cash to help balance out the hot hard chili heat.
It is the first time Saturn has hosted one of these events and, well, the response so far has been great. As of February 1st, there are around 18 competitors or teams that have entered the contest. We’re expecting more entries and a mess-load of guests. Yes, that’s a proper unit of measurement for a chili contest.
Now, last but not least, the next weekend features a highlight of the Tuscaloosa, Alabama social calendar. Egans’ Bar, that marvelous outpost of humanity on The Strip, will be hosting the 2016 Asses of Fire Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, February 20th. Entries will be accepted between 2 and 4:00 P.M. with judging and public tasting taking place after that. “Asses of Fire” is a proper designation for this contest as people are quite fond of making chili with scorpion peppers and other culinary tools of the devil.
The event page for “Asses of Fire” can be found at “The 2016 Asses of Fire Chili Cook-Off“. Check it out and, like with the one at Saturn, you can also email me at the address above.
Spread the word and get your insides ready to be melted away!
